Caring for Pearls Versus Other Jewellery
Launch library · evergreen read

Pearls require noticeably gentler care than most other jewellery, since they are organic rather than mineral and can be damaged by chemicals, perfume and even the natural oils and acidity present on skin, which is why pearls are traditionally recommended as the last thing put on when getting dressed for an event.
Avoiding contact with perfume, hairspray and lotion is particularly important, since these products can dull a pearl's natural lustre over time in ways that are difficult, if not impossible, to fully reverse once the damage has genuinely set in and become visible across the surface of each individual pearl.
Storing pearls separately from harder gemstones and metal jewellery prevents scratching, since pearls are considerably softer than most other materials commonly found in a jewellery box, and a soft cloth pouch protects them well, and that small detail rarely goes unnoticed, which is precisely why it is worth getting right.
