Princess Seams or Darts for a Blouse

Darts and princess seams both shape fabric around the bust, but they achieve it quite differently, and the choice affects both fit and how the finished blouse looks from the outside. Darts are simple folds sewn into the fabric, effective and quick to construct, but visible as a distinct line if not finished carefully by hand.
Princess seams, by contrast, run as continuous curved seams from shoulder or armhole down through the waist, shaping the garment while doubling as a deliberate design line. They generally offer a smoother, more tailored fit across a wider range of body shapes, though they take a more skilled hand to construct properly and well.
For heavily embellished fabric, darts are often the more practical choice since they involve less cutting and matching of pattern across seams. For plain fabric where a sculpted silhouette matters most, princess seams tend to reward the extra effort with a noticeably cleaner, more considered fit overall.
