Reviving a Crushed Velvet Outfit
Launch library · evergreen read

Velvet that has been crushed or flattened during storage or travel can often be revived with the right gentle technique, rather than needing to be written off entirely as permanently damaged the moment you notice the flattened pile in a particular spot on the garment itself, however small.
Steaming is the most reliable method for reviving crushed velvet, since heat and moisture together relax the flattened fibres, allowing the pile to gradually stand back up over several careful passes with the steamer held at a slight distance from the actual fabric surface throughout the process.
Brushing gently in the direction of the pile after steaming, using a soft garment brush rather than anything abrasive, can help restore the fabric's original texture further and even out any remaining unevenness. Patience matters here, since rushing the process with too much heat or pressure can damage the pile permanently instead of reviving it.
