Storing Jewellery to Prevent Tarnish

Tarnish forms when metal reacts with air, moisture and everyday substances like skin oils or perfume, which means how jewellery is stored matters just as much as how carefully it is worn and handled during an event. Airtight pouches or lined boxes slow this reaction considerably compared with leaving pieces exposed openly on a dresser or in a shared drawer.
Storing different metals separately also helps, since some combinations can accelerate tarnish when pieces sit in direct, prolonged contact with one another inside a crowded jewellery box. Silver in particular benefits from anti tarnish strips or cloth specifically designed to absorb the compounds in the air that cause discolouration over time.
Cleaning jewellery gently before storing it, rather than putting it away straight after a long, sweaty event, removes residue that would otherwise sit against the metal for weeks at a time. A soft, dry cloth used immediately after wear is often all that is genuinely needed to keep pieces looking their best.
