A handful of tailoring terms make communicating with a tailor considerably clearer and reduce the risk of a genuine misunderstanding, since terms like ease, dart, grain and bias are used constantly in fittings without much explanation offered to a customer newer to custom made clothing, something that separates a rushed decision from one made with real consideration.
Ease refers to the extra room built beyond exact body measurements, a dart is a folded, stitched tuck used to shape fabric around curves, grain describes the direction of the fabric's weave, and bias refers to cutting diagonally across that grain for a more fluid drape.
Learning these terms, even at a basic level, genuinely empowers a customer to describe fit issues precisely and understand a tailor's suggestions more confidently.
