Pearls are graded on several distinct factors, including lustre, surface quality, shape and size, all of which combine to determine both a pearl's overall appearance and its market value within any given piece of jewellery it is eventually set into and sold as, whether loose or already mounted in a setting.
Lustre, often considered the single most important factor, refers to how sharply light reflects off the pearl's surface, with higher quality pearls showing a bright, almost mirror like reflection rather than a dull, flat sheen that suggests lower overall quality throughout the entire piece of jewellery being examined closely.
Surface quality and shape also matter considerably, with fewer visible blemishes and a rounder, more symmetrical form generally commanding a higher price. Understanding these basics helps when choosing pearl jewellery, ensuring the purchase reflects genuine quality rather than size or price alone as the only real consideration worth weighing carefully.
