What Guests Should Never Wear to Someone Else's Wedding

A short list of genuine wedding guest mistakes tends to repeat across most cultures and most families, and avoiding them is considerably easier than most people assume once you know what to actually watch for. Wearing white or the bride's own chosen colour on the main ceremony day remains the single most widely recognised rule to avoid breaking without good reason.

Overly casual footwear, particularly at a formal evening function, can undercut an otherwise carefully chosen outfit far more than people expect until they see the photographs later. Similarly, an outfit so elaborate it visually competes with the bridal party's own attire tends to read as poor judgement rather than genuine celebration of the occasion.

When genuinely unsure what is appropriate, erring toward slightly more formal and slightly more restrained almost always serves a guest better than the alternative. Weddings rarely fault a guest for being slightly overdressed, but a guest who has misjudged the tone entirely is remembered for considerably longer than anyone would like.
